The Burton Girls Do the Charleston

Okay, so this may be a stretch---but stick with me.
When my mother was 9+ months pregnant with Vivian,
she taught Gail and me how to do the Charleston—
A dance from the Roaring 20s---the decade of her own birth
Later that day--on December 31st, she went into labor.
We always claim that dance brought on Viv's new year's eve birth.
So how appropriate that we had our
First Annual Sisters Reunion
in CHARLESTON, South Carolina!!

For the record, no one really thought of this connection.
This mini-irony just came to me as I began to type.
We stayed at the King Charles Inn
Vivian planned a simple tea & sweets one afternoon.
Thankfully, the lady in the bakery
made better pastries than she took pictures.
One day Gail made us all wear matching shirts and
go around town getting our pictures taken.
Sometimes it was hard to find a photographer....
other than each other...
But most of the time it was not...
The famous Hyman's Seafood...
Some think it's a tourist trap.
But we really like the food and atmosphere.
The old open air market was just closing up on Friday night.
But a few nearby stores were open for business...
Grand and stately hotels...
Ritzy shopping malls...
Let's pick a book or two...
that fit our varied interests!
The Crab Shack is a great place to eat.
We highly recommend their fried green tomatoes
And went back a second time for the shrimp & grits.
Had to buy a genuine-artificial giraffe skin purse
at the open market on Saturday...
admired the sweet grass baskets...
but too expensive for our wallets.
Did some lap-topping in the evenings...
Stayed up until all hours of the morning.
And got a bicycle "rickshaw" ride from college student Sean.
around the historic old city.
A nice way to end our time together.
I love you, dear sisters and look forward to next year.

How fun. As you know, we were in Charleston over the summer, but it was HOT when we were there. We even had lunch at Hyman's and saw the baskets at the market.

But we didn't wear matching shirts, thank goodness.

I love the book in the middle. It's one of Kate's favorite. I have it memorized...

Sounds like a wonderful time with your sisters.
